A letter to my assaulter

To SFC *,

I do not know why you targeted me that day, so long ago.  If you just had a sexual need, or a more twisted fetish to hurt a woman while you got your kicks.  Did you consider it "just sex"?   Did you want me to die?

You did not know me except for what you saw of me on duty.  You did not know that I had a husband that I loved very much, we had been high school sweethearts.  You did not know I had two blond baby boys at home waiting for me and needing me to take care of them.  You did not know anything about me at all.  You probably didnt even know my first name.  All you saw was a female body.

You did not know why I was in the Army.  I did not join the military to be a sex toy to men like you.  I was struggling to mold my body from a mother into a soldier.  I struggled to leave my children behind to train.  I was struggling to provide a good life for my family on my low-rank paycheck.  I was struggling to fit in with people who did not respect me.  I was not an all-american-hero like you.

Did you think of me at all after you left me injured, wounded, used and broken in that dirty old barracks?  Can you possibly conceive that all these years later I still suffer from that day?  That pain can still exist?  That my body and soul were scarred forever?  That there have been times that I have wanted to die to turn off the memory of you strangling and raping me?

Still sick.. and why do you look like the after photo on the dont do meth poster?

My plan to get out of the army and heal up and be all better was just a fairy tale.

Years after the assault and after leaving base, I had kind of evolved into a negative, depressed, and anxious mess.  I would fly from anything that I considered even vaguely a threat.  So, if I went to a store, and I saw a man in an aisle, even a measly pimpled teenager stocking the shelves, I would  turn and go the other way.  I avoid driving now, although, I force myself to go out at least once per day so I dont hermit away like I did at one point, not leaving my house for two weeks straight until we were out of food.  I had taken to doing rituals and if I do not do the rituals I get frantic. Every day, I must at all costs have a bath in the late afternoon. If I do not, then I get crazed, itchy, scratching at myself and feeling filthy.  Every day, I am usually fairly okay in the morning, but by 1300 or 1400 hrs, I get a huge surge of fatigue and get very down.  Every day, I struggle to find motivation to live, and as I try to put makeup on and brush my hair, I look in the mirror, and instead of seeing me now, I see me then, that day, 1735 hrs, standing at home, stripping naked out of my wet panties and wrinkled BDUs, looking in the mirror at bruises, blood and bitemark.  Every day, I dread what I will have to do, especially if it involves an appointment where I must be around people or shopping where I must be around people, or driving in excessive traffic.  Usually I am not an aggressive person, but, when in a vehicle and some schmuck is tailgating me or cutting me off, it gives me a surge of anger.  I hate to drive so much now :(    I cant sleep, and when I finally do drift off, any little thing wakes me up, such as, the dog barking, the wind blowing, the refrigerator kicking on.  Anything.

Kids really do grow up fast... my children grew, then, were teenagers and didnt need me so much any more.  When this happened, I slipped even more in my depression.  The marriage was pretty much gone, just held on in name.  No affection, no intimacy, no friendship.  What is left?

I sought help at the VA.  Hated talking about my problems, it made them feel fresh again.  I was only just starting to be able to come to terms with being raped.  I stopped seeking help and again withdrew.

Depression worsening, unable to work, finally, around 2010, I realized that I no longer had a purpose one day.  The kids were going off with friends, and I was in the kitchen, and I realized I had nothing to live for.  At that point I craved to die.  I told myself I would wait until the kids graduated, and then I would end my miserable existence.  I almost couldnt wait for this to happen.  The way I look at it is, just turning off a switch.  And I wont suffer any more.

My health was so bad.  I had hormonal problems, adrenal problems, insulin issues, fatigue, chronic pain, depression, insomnia, and still, years on, popping back if I let myself, to that day and those moments of terror.  Worst was the seizures, sometimes full blackouts and sometimes awful twitching sessions and then hours of being as weak as a kitten and confused afterwards.  I got put on seizure meds, but still have issues.

My husband was no support or help.  He hated me, I guess, for the mess that I had become.  I looked like the "after" photo of  the women on the "don't do methamphetamines" poster.   Where was the vibrant, healthy blonde that was called "malibu" at basic training?  Gone, long gone.  My eyes sunken in, my skin blotchy, dry and marked, weight problems, skimpy and limp hair.  I look like a totally different person, and it is not just aging.

My birthday 2010 spent at a homeless shelter after a fight with my husband.  Miserable times and a miserable, filthy place.

Christmas eve 2010 spent at a suicide center when I almost lost the fight, lost the will to go on.  It hurt too much to even exist.  I sped away from home, mind racing, suffering, wanting it over.  I thought of ways to end my life.  Maybe jump from a tall bridge.  Pills too iffy, might just fall asleep.  Gun too iffy, might miss and be crippled.  I left the suicide center and drove for hours, planning on living in the car.  It was too cold :(  I had only a small jacket.  I was speeding at over 100 mph across the empty desert.  I tried to sleep in the car and could not.  I turned around and went home some hours later.

Ran away from home in 2011, left my husband.  I had loved him so much, before.  We had been kids together, I remember the first time I saw him in middle school, standing in the playground at PE, leaning against a fence in his red jacket.  Later, he gave me my first kiss just before I turned 16, a shy and exciting experience.  Later, he took my virginity, teaching me how to be sensual.  Later, he became my husband and father of my children.  But in 2011, there was nothing left.   So I left with the kids.   It was a desperate and crazy time.  But the distraction felt good, a  new place, far away from Fort Bliss.  I sold almost everything I owned, and packed up, moved out.   Now I had to find work or we wouldnt make it.  Those were incredibly poor times.  I thought I could find a job right away, but it took 2 months.  So I put ads on Craigslist that I would do housework.  Would make $20-$25 to clean up after slobs. Begged for food at food banks.  Begged for clothes from salvation army.   Finally found a job in a day care center, $7.50/hr.  Thought I would do okay with kids, they feel safe.  But the co-workers antics, gossip, and slacker behavior was so awful.  They would all take off to smoke weed in the parking lot and leave me alone in the gym, customers complaining.  They would toss around a few insults about me, well I am sorry I cannot buy better clothes or go to the beauty salon.  I am sorry I look like the after photo on the dont do meth poster.  I lasted a few months before I couldnt take any more and quit.  Jobless and penniless again.  Bounced around, had a few other jobs.  Botched interviews and entrance tests.  Why cant I concentrate?  Why do I mess up what I am trying to say?  Some jobs lasted a few weeks.  Some only a few days.

Months, years going by.  Mostly just existing, barely getting by.   I finally got Obamacare and sought help, found a therapist and began treatment for PTSD and depression.  Hmmm I am not sure why, but, therapy for me makes it all worse.  Like poking at an old wound to bring up thoughts, memories, details.  I have tried to stick with it, but, writing a detailed account of the assault for therapy sucked me into a deep, dark depression possibly even worse than the one I had in 2010-2011.  Suicide started to sneak into my thoughts again. It seems like a good thing to do, to just turn out the lights and end it all.  And so here I am.  Trying to think, trying to put things in perspective.

I know what happened was a long time ago.  But I also know I am incredibly and horribly broken, mentally and physically, and I cant fix it.

Re-up are you crazy?

Time went by, I settled in to the new unit.  Got all sorts of abuse from that woman-hating SFC female.  Rude comments, insults, once so bad that she had me in the front leaning rest in punishment for some imagined wrong doing, she left the room, and I went to my cubicle, swept my few things into a trash bin and left, to the 1SG office, telling him, that I cannot work with that woman.  She told 1SG that I was having troubles at home and yadda yadda yadda to cover up for her own abusive ways.  Now I could see why the girl who I replaced in the S-1 was suicidal and wanted an out at any cost.  I found a way to leave the S-1 when there was an opening at the tavern/recreation center.  It was a little better there away from the abusive woman.  I still had issues with flashbacks to the assault.  Certain things, like PT with the male soldiers, seeing a man in uniform, smells, people standing too close to my side or back, set me off.  I joined the "fitness" troop and did PT twice a day, throwing myself into intense physical activity to distract from negative thoughts, I bettered my PT score by over 30 points.  I counted the months till I could leave the army.  I figured when I was away from those triggers, my problems would be long gone.  I was still having issues with acting up, which I regret.  So many things I said and did, out of what?  Not thinking straight, something.

Months rolled by, the kids were growing fast, had one of them in preschool now.   My time in the army was up.  I was offered re-enlistment with a bonus.  Said not only no, but hell no.  I had no job lined up for me when I got out, but looked forward to being away from base and all the bad memories.   There was no friendship lost when my time was up, and I was even scammed out of my saved up leave which should have been bought out.  I was free... or was I?

Suddenly there was no paycheck coming in.  My husband had a hard time finding a job.  I had thought being away from base would be better.  I had thought relaxing at home would be better.  I was wrong.  What happened was, I took to staying home at any cost and avoiding leaving the house.  I got worse about driving, until I avoided traffic.  I avoided crowds.  My mind was idle and would pop back to the assault many, many times a day.  I had been so busy working before that I just didnt have the time to think about it much.  Now I did.  I had my GI Bill, but became too sick to even think about pursuing an education.  I tried to go to school, and dropped out when I had panic attacks being closed in a small classroom too close to people.  Months went by.  Years.  I got worse and worse.  I started going to Walmart in the middle of the night to avoid people, shopping at 0200-0300 hrs.  My husband was working, and I spent most of my day caring for the kids and cleaning the house.  I wanted to work... but it was impossible.  I messed up in job interviews.  Messed up if I tried to get a job.  Panic attacks.   I became isolated somewhat.  I was so different.  So unwell.  After a fight, I told my husband why I was the way I was.  He thought I was "bipolar".  He had never known what really went on the day I was "attacked".

I wonder if things would have been easier if I had gotten help sooner rather than later?

The shit hits the fan, kind of...

There was a lesbian E5 in our unit.  Now wait, yes this does kind of tie in with the assault and all the rest.  Back then, being openly gay or lesbian was not allowed in the military.  And for good reason.  You do not want to be in a communal shower or toilet or sleeping area with someone who looks at you with possible sexual ideas.  I remember at basic training, 30 girls hustling to get ready and down to formation, open bathroom stalls, only 4 or 5 toilets for 30 girls, we were so desperate that we would squat right there in the middle of the floor, and pee in the drains.  Shared showers but so what?  Just another girl.  So, this E5 female, we kind of knew things were "off" with her.  And one night, a few weeks after my assault, she drunk-dialed me at home about 2100 hrs.  The E5, with slurred speech, was looking for someone to hear about her lovelife problems.  I had to hear all about her girlfriend whom she had had a fight with.  The E5 was busting a move just like a man would, flirting, asking me to go to a hotel with her in Albuquerque.  It was all very inappropriate and disgusting.  She went on with talking about herself as being "gay", her issues with her female lover, and all sorts of things I did not want to hear.  I finally told her I had to get to bed as we had PT/ and work in the morning.  I went and told my husband what had gone on in the conversation and he kind of laughed about it saying, "I knew men were after you, but now women too?"

The next morning, after PT,  PFC H and I were waiting for our assignments.  And I confided in PFC H about the lesbian conversation.  I was not really worried about it, just shocked that it had happened.  PFC H was not surprised in the confirmation of the E5 being a lesbian.  But, she went, and told EO.   And the EO Sgt sought me out.  He said something along the lines of, "*****, I got a report that SGT ****** made advances towards you yesterday."    I was disappointed that PFC H had stirred this up... and I didnt think before speaking, I blurted out:  "Yes, but, I am not worried about that, it is nothing, compared to I was attacked at the barracks."  Immediately I had a sinking feeling, seeing the EO Sgt's face.  He took it and ran with it... I should have said nothing more.  I should have downplayed it and said oh yeah, so and so came and smacked me on the ass.  I was questioned.  I gave a partial story.  I said that the E7 had found me alone in the storage barracks, grabbed me, and touched me.  There was an investigation, but I never gave his name, and I never thought about pressing charges.  In spite of only a partial story, I was pulled from duty and put in the S-1, basically an admin section where the laziest of soldiers hide out and file papers and do almost nothing all day long.  I hated it... I had no desk, no chain of command, nothing to do.  The girls in the S-1 didn't want me there and let that fact be known.  I was insulted, and basically shunned.  My morale dropped even lower.

I made a comment to an E-4 female at the unit one day, that I was having stress issues and didnt want to go to the shooting range.  She went and told the Captain, and the Captain mandated that I go to "mental health" for evaluation.  I went to psychiatry.  Told them that partial story and that I was stressed.  Went to a group stress management session or two.  Hated it, hated talking about the assault, hated being in there with the nuts.  I went a few more times to therapy and then dropped out.

In spite of the fact that I did not want to press charges, and only gave a partial account of the assault, a high ranked investigator of the Staff Judge Advocate was assigned to the case.  This LTC female questioned me a few times.  My husband was called in to give a statement about me calling him home, and seeing bruises on my neck.  The investigator was looking into both the assault, and the inappropriate behavior of the E5.  Meanwhile, the Captain still had me on his shit list.  He'd  put me to work with the federal prison workers, where I would be assigned all day long to cut grass, rake gutters, weed eat, paint, clear fields, etc,  hard labor.   Many a day I toiled alongside the prisoners, even made a friend of one of them.  He'd see me struggling and tell me to take a break in the shade while he would finish cutting grass or other chores.  One day, I was in the barracks CO office, not sure why I had to be in there that day. I overheard the Captain telling some of the SGTs that the E5 issue was blown out of proportion and just a drunk-dial.  Which it was, but, it was also an inappropriate fraternization of a gay soldier against a subordinate.

I was absolutely miserable.  I had to see that lesbian E5 in the unit.  I avoided any place the E7 might be, but we were still working on the same base.  I was moping in admin all day long when I was not working with the prison camp guys.  I finally bypassed the chain of command and wrote a short letter to the LTC of our unit.  I did not go into details, but said I was having problems in the unit and requested to be sent to a small range base off of Fort Bliss.   The request was approved.  I was going to transfer units. I had a small glimmer of hope at the news.  I could finally be far away from the E7, and have a fresh start.

Did I mention I had developed a problem of saying and doing inappropriate things?  I had put in for a small grant through an on-base charity, to take my son to the dentist.  Even with me paying for dental insurance through a dependents program, it would cost hundreds for my son to have his teeth fixed.  (there was no free dependent dental care which the recruiter had promised me).  At this time, my family of 4 was living off-base, solely on my PFC pay.  To apply for the grant I had to write a request with a reason for it.  I had hired a Mexican man a few months prior to reroof my house.  I had given him my enlistment bonus of $4,000 to do the roof and other improvements.  He stripped the roof down, started some work, and one day, stole my ladder, and never returned.  Left the roof down to the bare wood.  Ignored my calls.  I had to buy bundles of shingles and my in-laws came out and nailed them on. I was broke.   So in the grant request, I wrote something along the lines of: "I hired a man to roof my house, he stole my money and went back to the barrio".  The Captain read the grant request and called me in to his office, the EO SGT was there.  He said I was racist, and that "there is no place in MY army for you".  I had nothing to say to that.  I should have told him he was mistaken about my comment on the grant request.   He had no sympathy for a broke E-3 who had been robbed of $4,000.  The Captain truly seemed to have a hatred of me, and I did not mean to do anything wrong, and I was not racist.  My own grandmother is hispanic, making me 1/4 latina.  The Captain's hatred continued.  One weekend, I had the day off, and my husband drove me and the kids to a lake about 2 hours away.  It was a wonderful distraction, we even rented a boat for an hour.  It made me happy to see the kids so excited.  When we returned home in the evening, the answering machine was blown up with calls.  At this time I did not have a cellphone, could not have afforded one even if I wanted one.  It seems the unit had a random drug testing, and every soldier was mandated to come in for a urine test.  I called in, and the Captain said get on base NOW.  So I went in.  The unit was abandoned, everyone off duty.  The Captain said I would wait in this room, until the female SSG who did the female drug testing would arrive.  I sat, and waited.  And waited.  It got late.  It was night time, then late night.  I sat all night long.  Nothing but hard plastic chairs in the room.  I tried to lay on the floor to sleep, and could not.  All night I sat there, tired, miserable, and punished because I was not waiting at home to answer the phone on my day off.  In the AM, about 0730?  the female SSG came in, and I gave my urine sample.  I went back home, too tired to think straight. I went to bed, exhausted.  During the time I slept, my father in law came over to visit my husband.  He left the gate open. And my 15 year old dog, which I had had since I was a small kid, wandered out and was forever gone.

Deaf, half crippled, and beloved by me like a family member.  If I had been awake as usual during the day, this never would have happened.   My morale lowered even more.  The Captain was abusive, the girls in the S-1 were abusive, I was blamed all around, I was disliked.  A pregnant E-4 in the S-1 liked to call me "white trash", even though she was the one who wouldnt say who her baby-daddy was, she was unmarried and living on base housing and basically a lazy mooch who pretended to file papers during the day.  I counted the days until I could transfer units.

The LTC investigator called me in a final time.  She had completed her investigation and said she knew who my attacker was, just by the rank/location/description.  I didnt say anything... the army was being a true let-down to me and I was tired of the buddy-hookups and good ol boys and ass slapping and name calling.

I finally got my orders to go to the range base.  I hoped for a fresh new start.  I truly wanted it to work.  I arrived, the first day, orders in hand, excited.  I had made an effort to have a pressed uniform and shined boots, my hair tightly braided.  I was first put in admin.  There was another PFC there, and I asked her about the SFC who ran the S-1.  Oh it started all over again.  The SFC female hated women, and hated white women in particular because her husband ran off with one, I was told.  I was replacing an E-2 who had chaptered out of the army after being suicidal at the treatment of the SFC female.  She had gotten pregnant and gotten the hell out.  I still held on to a strand of hope.  Until PFC M was giving me a tour of the small range base.  There was a SGT, E-6 I believe, who saw us walking around.  And I heard him say, "There is *****.  Watch out, she's a troublemaker."   My chance at a fresh start never happened.  A bad reputation preceded me to the new unit.  But at least I was away from the E7 who had assaulted me.

A child of rape?

A couple weeks went by after the rape, my period is late.  It hadn't occurred to me at first that there was a possibility to conceive a baby from my rapist.  I was just so concerned with healing and hiding away after the assault.  Till time went by, and I was trying to remember the date of my last period.  My menstrual cycle was like a clock back then, 28 day cycles.  I usually would mark a little "p" on my calendar.  I was at least two weeks late.

I cherished my two baby boys.  It was so wonderful and incredible to watch them grow and learn.  I thought of the possibility of a baby that was born not out of love, but out of a criminal act.  A baby who looked like his father, a man who stole part of my soul away from me.  I was all kinds of crazy when I thought I might be pregnant with the E7's child.  Not thinking right, not acting right, not feeling right.  '

I went for a pregnancy test.

I distinctly remember getting the news that it was negative... yet...

Some of those dreams, those night terrors, why are there dead fetuses strung up for me to see?  Why does the demon with those supersized pupils show me this?  Why does March 6, 1999 stand out?  Why do I ask my husband if I had blocked out some memory, it itches at me, or, is it just a reaction to the possibility of it all?  Could I have had an abortion and it was so horrific that my mind shut the memory of it out?  Could I have given birth and given up the baby?  I just do not know.

To heal, or not to heal

Being in the military, and also a wife and mom to small kids made for an incredibly busy day.  I was on base for 11 hours or more per day.  Then return home to hungry children, dogs, chores, home repairs, laundry etc etc etc.  Being busy is good when trying to heal from an emotional mess... because I didnt have much time to dwell upon and think about the rape.  Later, this would not be the case.

A few days after the assault, I was relieved to see the bruising fade from my neck, breasts, and thighs.  The horrible bite mark scabbed over, peeled off the old skin.  I had swelled up around the upper bridge of my nose and eyes when I was hit.  The swelling slowly subsided, but, my nose did not look the same.  It hung crooked, and I couldnt breathe out of one nostril.   It was not until many years later when I saw an ear, nose and throat specialist, that I confirmed what I already knew, as the doctor tried to put a camera probe down my left nostril.  That one massive punch during the assault broke my nose and deviated my septum.  I could hide it a little with makeup and concealer, but it was not the same.   I had a strange droop and asymmetry in my eyelids and cheeks.  This too could be somewhat hidden with makeup, but I began to avoid having my photo taken because I would see it, an ugliness and brokenness that couldnt be denied.  Three days after the rape, I locked the bedroom door and lay on the bed, a mirror in hand, examining the damage to my most private area.  Healing too, but still red and torn in the perineal.  I now had some swallowing problems from the damaged trachea, food getting stuck midway down my throat.  Even small vitamins or pills would get lodged and need plenty of flushing.  Doctor says dysphagia.  Rear neck stiffness/clicking which sometimes seems to cause headaches, or radiate pain down my shoulders and back.  Doctor says fibromyalgia.

Mental healing is much different than physical healing.  Because you can try to tell yourself you are okay, but in reality you are very much not okay.  You do not see a physical wound.

I started avoiding just about everything.  After PT in the morning, I used to go to the gym to shower and change.  This was impossible now, to see the men in there.  So I would drive after PT to an empty part of the base, on the far end of a motor pool, an empty road.  Changing in my car, so cramped and uncomfortable.  Listening to the radio and counting the minutes until I would have to face people again.   I started avoiding others at lunch, which was a shame, because I had a civilian friend, R, we were like peas in a pod and used to chat and gossip and enjoy lunch together.  I would rush out of duty at 1130 for lunch hour, I had found an old library in the basement in the old Bliss buildings.  No one was ever there, and the only staff was an elderly volunteer woman.  It was quiet and felt safe, and I could browse the books and take my mind off everything.  I was afraid to see the E7 and tried to keep to myself.  But every time I had to drive near that empty barracks, it was like a fresh stab wound.

In retrospect I wish I would have sought help, immediately.  I wish I would have gone to the hospital and gotten a rape kit done, I probably needed stitches on the perineal tear, I could have had my nose set, and could have started on therapy.  I guess the reason I did not was twofold.  First, I did not want the E7 to retaliate against me.  I am not sure if anyone could understand the brutality of the attack, unless they had suffered a similar assault.   Second, I wished to only forget and move on from what happened.  I feared the man.  I feared he would get me again, or, kill me to shut me up.  He had been in the army for 14 years, no doubt had friends "high up".   I was a nobody, private first class woman with less than a year in service.  Do I feel I do not deserve justice?  No.  But I feel the army would take his side against mine, and shelter him.  I did not want the shame of public knowledge of my rape.  I didnt want my family to know.  I do get angry... I feel he took something from me, stole it.  I feel he wounded me mentally and physically.  He exposed me to possible blood bourne illness, STDs, and pregnancy.  He used me and left me a shell of what I was.  So I told no one, at first.

The neurological problems are trickier.  Dizziness is the worst, making it so hard to drive. Wobbly on my feet.  I went with dizziness complaints to the doctor and they always would think it was my ears.  A trip to the ER with severe dizziness and the ER doctor tells me that "certain patterns can cause dizziness in people with depression."  Vertigo, spinning, feeling like my eyes are moving too slow for my head movements. Headaches could come on at any time, but especially when in bright sunlight.  Blanking out... spacing out... was it too much stress and anxiety or worse?  Was it brain damage?  I couldnt concentrate.  I used to love, love to read long books.  Now I could skim over some, but not in detail. I felt like I wasnt thinking right.  I would get crazy ideas, have explosive inappropriate comments, or dangerous self-destructive ideas.  Just crazy stuff... like me going online and looking for a prison penpal. A  horrible idea.  I had nightmares, night terrors, and crazy bad insomnia. The night terrors were the worst that first summer but never totally went away.  Demons with strange eyes, shadowy men in the corner.  Not sleeping left me exhausted during the day.  Later, severe depression. Later, seizures.  Later, suicidal.

More problems, I cannot even think of them all now.  I was so changed.

Am I okay? Wounds of a different kind of war

I stood there with my eyes closed, breathing, listening.  Glad the assault was over with.  I struggled with shaking hands to pull my panties and pants up, and made my way to the bathroom, locked the door.  That felt safe, but I hurt so much.  Aching, sore between my legs, my nipples, my neck, my mouth, my head.  I went immediately to the toilet, let my pants fall down, grabbed a huge wad of toilet paper and tried to clean myself off.  I could smell the E7's sweat on me and worse.   Another wad of toilet paper, trying to dry off.  The toilet was full of crumpled paper.   I fixed my panties, pants, bra, tucked my tshirt back in.    Went to the mirror at the sink.  Looked at myself, pale, with big, scared eyes.   Am I okay?  I washed his saliva off my face.  My mouth is swollen, my neck is red,  the bridge of my nose puffy, my eyes bloodshot.  My hair is messed up, long strands hanging down off my braid.  I rinsed my mouth again and again with water, fixed my hair.  Cool damp paper towels on my tear streaked face.  I look better... am I okay?

I stayed in the bathroom a long time, trying to fix myself, hoping the E7 wouldnt come back, and trying to be okay.  An hour?  Finally I emerged. It is quiet.   I cross the room and look out into the parking lot, nothing but my little car parked there.  I kept telling myself that it was over and done with and I am okay... and I got back to work, finishing the field prep.  It was late in the afternoon, and SFC C and PFC  H returned, happy and cheerful and I try to act as if all is normal.  Then it was 1700 and time to go home.  I was all alone at home, my husband and kids in Indiana with family.  I went straight to the bathroom, filled the tub with hot soapy water, and took all my clothes off, standing in front of the mirror.  I am so mangled... so broken... there was swelling around my eyes and nose, my lips still puffy.  The bite mark on my neck/shoulder is purple.  There are horizontal bruises on the front of my neck, my nipples are red and raw, dark finger sized bruises all over my breasts and thighs.  I am sticky on the inside of my thighs, and some bleeding.  I get in the tub and scrub like mad.  The water burns as it hits the bite mark, and between my legs, where I am torn where I havent hurt since my son was born, perineal tearing.   The hot water feels so good on my sore and battered body.  I wash off the smell of him, and just want to have my body and my self back.  I got out of the bath, dressed, and called my husband.  I asked him to come home... I needed him so much, to have the safety of him there... he asked why, as he had only been with his family a few days.  I told him I was attacked on base, I didnt give details.  He was home in a day or so.  He briefly asked about the assault.  He saw some bruising on the back of my neck.  I just told him a man attacked me in the barracks.  I did not elaborate.

I wanted to ignore what happened, heal up and move on, forget about it.

Not long after the assault, the unit was gathered together, innoculations.  Physically I had begun to heal.  But, on this day... the anxiety which would come to cripple me began.  We were taking off our bdu jackets, prepping for the vaccination.  I glanced over, some random soldier, but, a similar build to my attacker.  Immediately, I popped back, back to the moment, when the E7 was taking off his BDU jacket, just before the actual rape act.  I felt like I had been punched in the stomach.  I was instantly severely ill, couldnt breathe, my heart racing.  I ran from the room, to the bathroom, gasping for air.  How, how was I back in that miserable moment of pain and terror?  I kept telling myself I was safe.  I calmed down, then I was angry at myself for flipping out over nothing.  Essentially, this was my first panic attack.  The first taste of a downward spiral of anxiety and mental issues to come.

I began to have problems driving.  If someone was too close to the back or side of my car, I would get that instant sick and panicky feel.  The anxiety would cause dizziness, vertigo, to the point I would often have to pull off the road until it passed.  After a few episodes of this, I began to have anxiety in anticipation of having another panic episode, and avoided driving when I could.  The kids would see me having these episodes, although I tried so hard to hide it.  My mother wondered why I went to see her less and less, our weekly outings turning into monthly or longer.

I avoided my husband's touch after the rape, telling him I was menstruating kept him at bay for 5 or 6 days.  My body healing, but oh that first attempt at intimacy after the rape, excruciatingly bad.  An eager husband, unknowing as to why I was not "in the mood".  His hands on my body making me shy away, I was unable to get aroused, and, that first sexual intercourse after the rape, horror, popping back, how?  how can I do this when it just takes me back?  Sobbing silently, enduring my husband's lovemaking as my now twisted mind turns my marital bed into the memory of assault.   Tearing, hurting, forcing, pinching, hitting, choking..

Anxiety was something I didnt know about before the rape.  Oh how I remember the days of being happy and hopeful.

I was still going through my days as usual, or trying to.  Lots of work, physical training.  My morale was low, I was nervous, and why oh why, I started acting up, saying and doing inappropriate things.  I was in trouble pretty much nonstop, I was a problem child of the unit, the Captain did not like me.  I was having problems with keeping up my beauty and hygiene routines.  My uniform was wrinkled and messy.  I would  blurt out awkward and inappropriate comments.  My health was changing.  I no longer had as much energy.  I got headaches.  My hair was falling out.  I can't sleep.  Nightmares, and worse, night terrors, where I am partially awake but the monsters come out.  I am so tired, and scared... sleeping with a full light on.

A few weeks went by.  My period is late.

Assaulted

It took a long, long time for me to be able to say the word "rape".  Like if I didn't say it, then that is not what it was.  I would say "I was attacked".  I would say I was touched.  I would say "he grabbed my neck".  I would say "he touched my breasts".   I would skirt around it because I didn't want people to know.  But it is what it is.  Years and years later I am still struggling with emotional and physical problems, and I hope, somehow, to sort things out here.

In early summer of 1998, I was a young PFC in the Army at Fort Bliss, Texas.  I had been in the Army for less than a year.   I had wanted so badly to have a career.  I already had everything else a young woman could want... a beautiful husband, two baby boys, a cozy little house off base.   I had joined the military in 1997, shocking my family.  Shipped off to boot camp, then AIT.  I was away from my toddler boys for 6 months, before I came back home, to guaranteed stationing near my home.  It had been so difficult to train to become a soldier, but I had passed, I was even "honor graduate" of my class.  I was placed in a unit and enjoyed the physical training, and didn't mind all the hard work.  I was on friendly terms with some of the other young soldiers, and the Sgt who was in charge of us was a good, hard-working Filipino who I will call SFC C.

It was a usual workday, consisting of getting up at 0500 hrs, being on base and in formation for PT at 0600, brisk exercise, then off to the gym to shower and change, duty at 0900 hrs.   Our unit was prepping to go to the field that day.  SFC C had me and another private, who I will call PFC H, hard at work.  There was a line of abandoned old barracks near our unit building, we used one for storage.  SFC C, PFC H, and I were in the storage barracks, and SFC C gave me a list of chores that needed to be done, mostly washing out water pots.  SFC C was taking PFC H to get rations, and I was left alone in an old kitchen area, where a big industrial sink made it easy to do cleanup.   It was a very hot day, probably 95 degrees, and muggy in the old barracks.  It was quiet in there, except when I had the sprayer at the sink on.

I heard the large double doors, that lead to a small patio, stairs, and parking lot, open up.  I was not concerned, because any of our unit might go into the barracks for supplies.   A moment later I saw an E-7 I knew, enter the building.  He strode in purposefully, in uniform, woodland camo BDUs.  He looked over, saw me, our eyes locked for a brief second.  I wondered what he was doing there.  He walked into the kitchen, looked down the hall, then into the offices, and finally came back to where I was.  He stood way too close, on my right side, and I stepped away a bit.  He asked me what I was doing, and I showed him, and told him that SFC C had me doing such and such, and was out with PFC H.  He asked a question or two about the field exercise.  Then he asked something like "are you all alone"?   And I told him yes.   The E-7 began to make innuendo, such as, that I was not alone any longer, and, "imagine what we could do since we are all alone".  In retrospect, and as a grown woman now, I know that if I was alone and hearing innuendo like this, I would likely have bolted and got out of there.  As a young and trusting woman who was still quite inexperienced with the ways of the world, I didn't have much of a clue.

The situation quickly got out of hand.  It began with the E-7  pushing up against me again.  Then he grabbed me.  I got away from him once, but he grabbed me again, this time pinning my arms, and trying to kiss me. What I remember most of the way he looked at that time, was the strangely large size of his pupils, and the way he was breathing hard and sweating, even before the violence really kicked in.  It is the details that cause me the most pain... remembering the way he smelled, or the feel of his hands hurting me as I was helpless.  I was squirming and trying to fight him off.  Strange how very helpless I was... I had thought prior to that day, that I was a strong and capable young woman.   After the kiss, he let my arms go, briefly, and I thought it was going to be over with.  Unfortunately, he only let me arms go to unbutton and remove his BDU jacket.  That sinking, dreaded feeling as he did that.   Fear inside, dread.  So awful to feel that I could not get away. I had both my hands on his chest and trying to push my way past him, when he hit me, right between the eyes and the bridge of my nose.  *Pow*, a Mike Tyson punch.  A sudden rush of pain and everything turned white, I was stunned, doubled over.   He took advantage of me being debilitated, and ripped my jacket, shirt, and bra up, fingers violating my breasts.  Oh the misery of it... my vision was inching back, I still had strange whiteness/fuzziness, and I was telling him stop it, stop now, and squirming.

Nothing I could say affected the E-7.  He was trying to unbutton my pants.  My head was throbbing.  The E-7 was so rough that he jerked me off the ground, trying to get my pants off.  I was forced up to the metal counter, and he was trying to kiss my neck.  When I jerked away from his unwelcome mouth, he bit down on me so hard that tears rolled down my face.  He had my pants down and I was basically exposed from armpit to knee.  I was begging him by now to stop.  I was clawing at his hands and arms.  He pinned my wrists and hands down on the counter with one of his hands and he got his own pants down and then terrible, rough, painful penetration.  I detached somehow just a bit then... I heard my own strange sounds of pain and anguish and thought, this is like someone else... this is not noises that I should make.   He let go of my wrists and there was nowhere I could go, being crushed up against the counter with him behind me.  He hands were brutal on my breasts, nipples, labia.

How is this sex, when the only sex I had really known, was a playful, fun, pleasurable and arousing sex that I had with my husband?  It is like two opposites.   This rape, was incredibly foul, painful, and unwanted.  How could I know it would get even worse?  I stood there, forced to withstand his assault, aching in my head, neck, breasts, vagina.  And then he slid his right arm up and put me in what the military calls a "submission hold."

The E-7s forearm squeezed against my throat.  I stopped my crying out, and stopped fighting him, because now I was using both my hands to try to pull his arm away from my throat.  I was gasping for air, I could not breathe.  I felt he might kill me now, so that I would not be able to tell anyone what he had done to me.  My body was limp.  I turned my head to the side and tried, oh I tried just to get  a sip of air.  How is it possible, the horror of the actual rape is lessened by the need to breathe.  How long did it last?  It felt impossibly long, this torture, the E-7s arm is contracting, cutting off my air completely, I get a hot, pinching feeling in my face and head, then his arm loosens just a little bit and I am gasping.  I am dizzy, burning hot, gripping his forearm as he does that squeeze and relax.  Is he seeing how much I can take before I am completely unconscious?  Am I still alive?   Does he want me to die?

I can't stop what is happening.  I know what will happen, as I hear his grunting and for those minutes I was being strangled, all I wanted was to breathe. He ejaculates, his arm tight against my throat, but after he climaxes, his arm loosens off my neck, and all I do is gulp in air and lean weakly over the counter.  I submit.  My hands and arms are weak, my legs shaking.  Again I am detached, like I am watching a movie about someone else.  My eyes are closed, I say nothing and dont fight him anymore, as he grinds against me, fondles, pinches.  A miserable sobbing in my chest.

There is a sound, a rumbling, like a truck passing on the street outside.  I say something like "PFC H is back".  The E-7 quickly gets dressed.  He says something to me, but I dont hear it.  And then he leaves.  And leaves my life in tatters...
